Recently, I had the pleasure of going down the Rangitaiki river. Our guide, Justin from River Rats, took much care in explaining the whole process and also detailing the possible dangers, however remote they may have been. Whitewater rafting is definitely a team thrill. You must be prepared to work with the others on the raft and to do what you are told, often with split second reaction. The water level on the river was high and it was rated a grade 3 with a small section rated slightly higher at grade 4 (children under 13 are not allowed on rafts through Grade 4 sections and so they need to get off and then get back on). While I would have thought that this time of year (July) would have been extremely cold, the wetsuit ensured that the cold was hardly felt. The day started around 11.30 at Murupara......
