More often than not, bistros don’t seem to vary too much. What is on the menus and how they are prepared are all very similar. Dom’s Bistro, however, is the exception.
More often than not, bistros don’t seem to vary too much. What is on the menus and how they are prepared are all very similar. Dom’s Bistro, however, is the exception. This establishment is a cut above the rest. Firstly, despite having the capabilities to seat over 200 people there are closed off areas that help create a little privacy. This alone separates Dom’s from its competitors that go for that bar like image. Secondly, the food at Dom’s is of a high standard, and has a strong home cooked feel about it.
I went there one Friday afternoon for lunch with an associate and was pleasantly surprised. We started off with some Fettuccini Carbonara. Now I must say that this dish gives my Italian mother-in-law’s version some serious run for its money. Not too heavy, just right to get the appetite going for the main. I had the Scaloppine Rosso. The veal was so tender that it melted in my mouth and the red wine sauce was the perfect accompaniment. My associate had the barramundi. Fish this good and fresh has not made its way across our palates in a while. Accompanying our meals we had the house wine. The Devil’s Lair Fifth Leg is good moderate wine with a nice spicy after taste. As for the desserts, I had the more traditional Italian sweet, Tiramisu. My associate had the real prize winner, original pancakes topped with Tia Maria, vanilla ice cream, crushed nuts and grated chocolate. It was almost a bitter sweet flavour, but in itself, worth revisiting Dom’s. Finally the real test – the coffee. Too many places say that their coffee is the best but then don’t follow through with the goods. Here at Dom’s the coffee was exceptional.
It’s great to see an establishment in the suburbs that offers a good variety of food and puts pride into the preparation and presentation of their meals. They also cater for functions and have a set menu for $40 that includes all the beer and wine you can drink. One aspect that I really liked about Dom’s was the payment options. Like nearly every other place under the sun, they accept all major credit cards. But if you pay by cash then they will take 5% off your total bill, and when you are looking at taking the whole family out to dinner, that can save you quite a few dollars.
Dom’s Bistro has brought a little style and class to the suburban bistro and is worth the visit. Once you have been there once… I’m sure you will go there again.
