The Department of Education and Training provides annual funding to each school through the school's student resource package for essential items of education in government schools.

This includes school staff, buildings and equipment.

Schools may seek contributions from parents for:

  • Materials such as textbooks, student requisites and school uniforms
  • Optional school materials or services that parents may or may not require, such as magazines or photographs
  • School materials and services that are supported by voluntary contributions, such as beautification of the school grounds or funds for the school library.

The policy on school materials charges and parent contributions is that:

  • All schools materials charges and parent voluntary contributions are approved by the school council and parents are informed accordingly
  • The costs involved are within the capacity of parents to pay
  • Where parents choose not to pay voluntary contributions, their children must not be treated any differently from other students. Under no circumstances can any student be denied access to the normal education program or the reporting of student progress. The Department of Education & Training will investigate any alleged breach of these guidelines
  • Sensitivity is shown to the circumstances of individual students and families. For those unable to contribute, other means of payment are investigated. Some parents may be eligible for the Education Maintenance Allowance or the Youth Allowance (if their children are over 16) to help them meet the education needs of their children.

Parents can contact their local Department of Education & Training regional office or phone Education Line on 1800 809 834 if they have any concerns.
