Dogs are an important and rewarding part of many people’s lives and a well behaved dog is a valuable family member. As the lesson’s learned as a pup set the stage for adult behaviour, socialising and ‘pack’ connections must be initially made with its human family.
Once the puppy understands its position within the family ‘pack’ it can extend its horizons and be introduced to other pups and dogs. In other words, the pup should be educated about acceptable behaviours at home before it can interact positively with other puppies. Many people think parks are a good place to socialise their pup, however canine interactions in these places can be frightening and set the pup up for future behavioural problems.
To facilitate the establishment of acceptable home based ground rules, we are offering our Doggie Do’s and Don’ts © education program.
A free introductory session to Doggie Do’s and Don’ts © is held once per month at Canterbury Veterinary Clinic. This session provides general information on taking care of your pup with regard to health, husbandry and provides an introduction to training your pup. There is a veterinarian, veterinary nurse and a dog trainer present at this session to provide information and to answer questions. Interested people can then enrol in the Doggie Do’s and Don’ts © Training course.
Doggie Do’s and Don’ts © Course Outline:
Session 1: Ausdog © will come to your home for an education/training session involving you and your pup. This would cover many aspects of how you and your pup should behave at home and around the local streets and will take about an hour.
Session 2: This is a socialisation session involving 6 – 8 pups and one or two family members per pup. This session is aimed at conditioning your pup to visiting the vet clinic, and providing access to the various areas of the clinic in an informal setting. The session will also provide controlled interaction with other pups, teaching each pup how to behave in a sociable manner and the owner how to control their pup in these situations. This session will be held at Canterbury Veterinary Clinic and will take about an hour.
Session 3: This is a Group Training session involving 6 – 8 pups and one or two family members per pup. This session will be held at a nearby park or in the case of wet weather a large outdoor covered carpark and will include the basics of dog training, sociable behaviour and set the stage for future training. This session will take about an hour.
The course is designed to be an introductory course only and if you would like to go further with your dog training at the end of the course, you should contact Ausdog directly. The course takes place over an 8 week period and is open to pups between 8 and 16 weeks of age.
