Every relationship has it’s ups and downs and the romance between you and your job is no different. Try these strategies – if you are ready to make a start on improving your personal well-being and career journey.
1. Get motivated.
One of the best ways to boost your motivation is to think about your past successes. Don’t focus on obstacles and failures. Instead, make an effort to stay positive and focus your energy on what you are trying to achieve in your life. Show others that you are optimistic about the future. "See yourself in the driver’s seat!" says Mark, a bank teller for 10 years who was retrenched. "It’s your choice — become angry, frustrated and miserable, or accept that you need to take responsibility, explore your options and plan your next steps."
2. Maintain your well-being.
Take time to slow down. Carolina, a successful advertising executive with a global firm, says "I operate at high speed during the week. I see balancing work with relaxation as crucial. On weekends, I spend time with family, friends, and go roller-blading." Remember, your close relationships and friendships can be a big source of motivation. Build your personal and social support network. Maintain contact with people and share your upsets and joys. Make an effort to create a sense of order and vision in your life. Look at the present stage of your career journey and consider - Where are you now? What kinds of experiences, support or information could help you achieve your vision of the future?
3. Practise achievement in different areas of your life.
Whenever you get frustrated try to take a longer view and focus on your destination. Set new achievable goals in different areas of your life (eg. learn touch typing or to play the guitar). Pat yourself on the back as you strive towards your goals. Michelle, a project officer with a government authority, says "Small successes do count! Entering the local quilting competition was the best thing for my confidence. I won second prize!"
4. Have a sense of purpose.
Are you putting the most time and effort into the areas of your life that mean most to you? If you are feeling bored then it is time to weigh up your alternatives and set new priorities. Broaden your horizons and make an effort to build in high quality experiences in your life (eg. music, nature, literature, art, religion). "It’s really important to stop and check what’s most important to you … to follow your heart" says Roberto, a technical assistant with a telecommunications company. "After 2 years in this job I know I don’t want to stay in the industry. I love cars… I’m going back to study and plan to get into the automotive industry."
Taking your career down a new road takes courage and can help you to enjoy a new sense of adventure and control over your destiny!
