Very few people have the natural ability to become brilliant speakers. Almost everyone however, with a little help and practice is capable of speaking confidently, of expressing ideas clearly, and of “getting through” to an audience, whether it is a committee, a discussion group or a public meeting.

Rostrum is an organisation that helps people master and practice the art of speaking in public. It consists of a network of around 300 clubs around Australia and provides the opportunity to develop a range of effective communication skills ranging from formal presentations to effectively running meetings.

What Happens in a Rostrum Club Meeting

A typical Rostrum Club meeting has a speaking program in which a number of members of varied experience take part giving prepared or impromptu speeches, readings and other short speaking exercises. In addition on a regular basis, special training sessions are run by experienced club members.

Members take turns in chairing the meetings gaining valuable experience in meeting procedure. This is an important part of the learning experience.

As Rostrum is a training organisation aimed at developing the skills of its members, everything that has taken place during the meeting is subject to comment by specially trained coaches. You receive constant guidance from the club’s Training Officer and Coaches, experienced speakers able to provide advice and assistance to less experienced speakers.

Rostrum is Friendly and Fun

Above all else Rostrum is a fun experience. Whatever your standard you will find others in a Rostrum Club whose skills and confidence are no greater than yours and nowhere will you find a more supportive and responsive group. All members have something in common – the desire to master the art of effective speaking and to help each other.

Rostrum Clubs are located in the City and in the suburbs. They generally meet at night or at lunch times. The Malvern Rostrum Club however meets every Tuesday morning for one hour before work with breakfast provided.
