Mix it up!
To be fit requires a well balanced
training program to develop your
muscular strength, improve balance, agility and flexibility. For maximum
results incorporate in your weekly
routine: One 30 min compound strength training session, minimum of 30 mins of cardio exercise per day (this can be a combination of high and moderate
intensity exercise) and one rest day per week.
Strength training time
A personal trainer can assess your
current fitness, strength levels and transform your objectives into a
progressive and balanced exercise
routine. Together, you and your trainer can develop a training plan that will fit into your lifesytle and get you the best results in the shortest amount of time.
Set measurable goals
If you have a clear goal of what you want to achieve it makes it much easier to develop the right program and
measure success. So if your goal is to run 10 mins on the treadmill without stopping, plan little ‘mini challenges’ such as 2 mins, 4mins, 6mins of
running to see how you are progressing.
The same principle applies if your goal is to do a half marathon in three months time, you can measure your current speed and endurance and plan periodic
goals such as a 10k, 14k and 20k run and then vary your training regime to suit.
Be active everyday
Look for opportunities to be more active in your daily life, like taking the stairs instead of the lift, or parking your car a little further away from where you need to go. On the weekend plan to do
something different such as a hike, cycling, or roller blading, and build exercise into a fun and different activity with your partner, family or friends.
Eat for success
A well balanced nutritional program is necessary to support the development of stronger muscles and cardio fitness. Carbohydrates are essential to provide energy, you need protein to replenish
your working muscles and fluid intake must be increased to maintain adequate hydration at an increased exercise level.
