The benefits of meditation as a form of stress management are well recognised and accepted in our society. Large numbers of adults choose to attend a variety of relaxation classes to create a balance within their busy lives. Should it be surprising then to learn of an increased focus on the same topic within our schools?

A growing number of primary and secondary schools across Australia have introduced meditation into their school curriculum as a means to address issues of stress and anxiety within their student population.
Loosely defined, meditation is a method of mental training that involves getting the thinking, active mind to quieten down so that a restful state of mind can emerge.
Schools such as Eramus and Maharishi Primary Schools in Victoria have recognised the importance of the benefits of meditation within their student populations. They have both timetabled two ten minute periods of meditation daily for their students. Both schools have reported marked changes within their students who they claim to be reaping the benefits of meditation in a school environment.
Teachers and principals from these schools are reported as saying their students are happier, more relaxed, and display increased confidence and connectedness with their peers. In addition, pupils display increase focus and positive attitudes to their work tasks.
Whether your child’s school has such a program currently running or not, shouldn’t prevent you from adopting this valuable focus for your child at home. There are many books and CDs to guide you on your way, empowering you with knowledge and skills. One such CD has been created by Bronwyn Pearson, a practicing primary and secondary teacher with over 20 years experience.
In a response to the growing challenges and stresses she witnessed her students face daily she created her own meditation CD for children.
Heart Talk for Children teaches children aged roughly between the ages of 7 and 14 years, simple relaxation techniques. Armed with these relaxation skills children are better able to deal with the little stresses and challenges of their own life.
Heart Talk for Children teaches children to quieten their conscious, reasoning mind and to reach a place of safety and stillness, where new seeds of thought can be planted and nurtured to fruition. Within this quiet space created by the guided meditations, positive affirmations are suggested to support children towards health, happiness, peace and creativity.
It is recommended that this CD be listened to by children, whilst they are going off to sleep. In this receptive state children let go of any issues from the day and head off to sleep listening to positive, self-talk.
The Heart Talk for Children CD is available throughout Australia at good New Age shops, Readings and JB HiFi. You can also find out more by calling Bronwyn Pearson direct on 0409 177 343.
