MAKING AN INFORMED CHOICE
How do I select a school for my child? Should I send my child to a mainstream or specialist setting? These are two questions often asked by parents of children with special needs within our early education program. At the end of the day only you as the parent know the answer but making an informed choice is the key. At Monash SDS our parents are encouraged and supported in making this important decision. Parent nights are usually held during second term for parents of children who are eligible to attend school the following year. These nights cover information relating to submitting an application for funding, the assessment requirements and processes as well as a session on choosing a school for your child - the latter possibly being the most exciting and interesting night. Past parents from the school together with some of our current school parents are invited to come and talk about how they went about selecting the school their child now attends. They also discuss how they prepared their child to move to the new setting, plus any positive and negative aspects of the experience.  Past parents are drawn from a range of education settings including autism specific, mainstream, dual placements (Monash SDS and a mainstream school) and special schools.  This year a parent from our Brandon Park Primary School program will also be invited to talk.  After each parent has given a brief over view of their experience there is time for informal chatting over supper.  Our parents feel that they are supported when making their choice of educational setting for their child

.

Bedford Road,
Ringwood
9870 2002

(see page 17)

2007 has been another year of exciterment and learning as Ringwood Secondary College continues to work with local secondary colleges through the Maroondah Education Coalition and the Building Futures program. Education Week witnessed Open Night and the year 7 2008 Information Sessions; the Induction into our sporting Hall of Fame of year 12 student, Shane Asbury, for his swimming prowess; a French film festival: SRC Trivia Competition; staff - student debate; Prefect morning tea; recognition of service awards to the college; professional development for staff, ex-students tour the ATC; AIMS tests; Assemblies; guest speakers - all Bringing Learning to Life.
The musical production this year was Guys and Dolls and entertained 7 performances. The homecoming concert from the World Tour highlighted the poise and confidence gained by the talented troupe as they journeyed to NZ, Canada, England, France, The Czech Republic and Thailand. Late June a small group travelled to our sister school in Chiang Mai. This semester we welcomed seven students form Bitche in France for several weeks.  Student Leadership and voice remains a key focus of participation and involvement as leaders assist in tours, discussion groups, speak at Open Night, help Out of Uniform days, conduct assemblies and link with college leaders across the coalition. Student opinion is resourced for the Policy and Education subcommittee of Council and meetings are held regularly. All prefects have a portfolio and the Environmental Prefects have helped introduce an environmental pledge to be signed by all year 7 students.
Our four Stage Bands have performed at Mt Gambier and Junior and Senior concerts will take place this semester. A successful Jazz Night provided experience and entertainment for a crowded hall. The Senior Stage band was credited as best in the state at the recent Stage Bands festival. The year 11 Business Management classes conducted a market day as part of their course and Ringwood Secondary College continues to excel in the Cross Country events. A college walkathon is aimed at raising funds for tanks and students continue to support Daffodil day, Exo Day and Jeans for Genes. Parents have been busy at working bees, the Trivia Night, Debutante ball as well as liaising with the many parent groups. We remind the wider community that the Heritage group is always eager to hear of ex-students and their achievements and invite former colleagues and students to visit the college. Several of the class of ‘54 are involved with year 10 Commerce classes and will interview VCE students in term 3 to provide feedback and practice when facing prospective employers. Recently Peter Hunkin was inducted into the Science Hall of Excellence
Ringwood Secondary College faces an exciting future and the programs, teaching and learning that occur on a daily base continue to stimulate ideas and development to ensure this college progresses and offers the best opportunities for our community.
